As designers, we often face the significant challenge of seeking inspiration, as trends in the field of graphic design evolve very quickly, and staying up-to-date is crucial. However, it is common—and something that has happened to us both as a team at Tshirt Designs and to me personally—to come across articles that merely compile aesthetically pleasing and recent designs, many of which tend to repeat over and over.
The issue with this approach is that the market operates differently. Customer demands are shaped by what happens in stores and the real world, rather than by aesthetically pleasing or experimental designs that some designers try to showcase.
For this reason, we decided to write this article. Our goal is, first and foremost, to define the number, categories, and most representative and universal design trends that can serve as inspiration for crafting a meaningful design inspiration article. Additionally, we wanted to explore the market to identify what’s new in the print-on-demand business and what users are looking for in those designs.
To achieve this, we conducted a thorough investigation, not only into design categories but also specific styles, colors, typography, and shapes. Our aim was to create a high-quality compilation and a categorized list of what we consider to be the most important designs and styles. This list highlights the most relevant styles and categories based on our extensive research, aligned with what people are actively seeking. In fact, we conducted searches on Google and used keyword research tools, search categorization tools, and other resources to identify what’s truly trending and what people are looking for.
This effort allowed us to construct this list. Furthermore, our design and communications team meticulously reviewed the most interesting, complete, universal, and representative designs within each category to ensure that you, as readers, have access to a highly accurate and comprehensive compilation. It is quite likely that the designs you find in this list will not appear elsewhere—unless they’ve been copied from here—because we conducted our own original research to ensure uniqueness.
With that said, we are proud to present the most inspiring T-shirt design categories today:
-
Illustrated
This category typically features a main illustration that takes center stage in the design. The illustration can depict people, animals, objects, figures, etc., in styles ranging from drawings to realistic depictions or silhouettes.
For example, lately, we have been focusing quite a bit on athletes and cars as main subjects because they are quite eye-catching and fit well with this approach.
These designs often include words or phrases that complement the illustration. A wide variety of color palettes and typography styles are used, depending on the aesthetic of the main illustration.
-
Quote / Typography
Here, the text, its message, and the various fonts are the central elements of the design. Distorted effects on the fonts, such as glitch, decay, or fading, are commonly used. Variable fonts are also utilized, offering great versatility in features like weight, width, slant, and more.
-
Artwork / Artistic
Bringing a concept to life and evoking emotions are the main goals of artwork/artistic designs, which can sometimes be a bit challenging, but if you succeed, the result is splendid. The aim is to express an idea, convey meaning, or tell a story through techniques that emulate traditional art forms, such as paintings, pencil drawings, and more.
-
Simple / Minimalistic
This style heavily utilizes white or negative space to give its designs a clean and aesthetic look. Shapes and illustrations are kept as simple as possible, often paired with neutral colors.
-
Children / Baby
These designs often feature cute and charming illustrations, as their primary goal is to appeal to children and babies who are naturally drawn to them. Pastel tones, characters like animals or fantasy figures, and illustrations of toys work particularly well. The typography is typically simple and easy to read.
If you’re going to design something in this style, you just need to think about anything that your younger siblings, nephews, or children enjoy, that’s exactly what we do.
-
Colorful
As the name suggests, colors take center stage in this type of design. It features everything from contrasting combinations like complementary tones to illustrations with vibrant and highly saturated color palettes. These designs aim to evoke energy and dynamism and often incorporate bold, thick fonts.
-
Love / Valentine’s / Couple:
The central theme of the illustrations here is love and romantic relationships. Colors such as red, white, and pink are commonly used—yes, we know it’s a bit of a cliché—along with illustrations like hearts, rings, gifts, roses and couples hugging or kissing, etc. The typography in this type of design is typically elegant and cursive.
-
Animals
From birds, mammals, and fish to pets, insects, and farm animals, all kinds of animals are used in this type of design. However, if you’re looking for something guaranteed to be a hit, we recommend pets, as they immediately connect with the feelings of people who currently have or have had one.
They can be illustrated, realistic, or simply represented as silhouettes, either isolated or in their natural habitat. There is a strong emphasis on the different textures found in the animal world, such as fur, feathers, or skin.
-
Cars
For car enthusiasts, this design category features various types of models, many vintage—our favorites due to their appealing design—with complementary elements such as smoke, tools, or roads. The goal of these designs is to evoke a sense of speed, power, and luxury, often using visual effects like reflections or flashes.

Black and White
Black and white will always be the ultimate perfect combination, as the strong contrast they create is versatile, timeless, and gives the design visual clarity and simplicity. But not all the composition has to be black and white; for example sometimes we like to add an element of a different color, and the results are something we are very proud of.
It is common to see sans-serif (modern and clean) or serif (more classic and elegant) typography. Shadows and highlights are often used to add depth. With no additional colors, the focus is on creating a strong visual composition.
-
Cute
“Cute” always aims to evoke positive and pleasant emotions through adorable, cartoonish illustrations or anthropomorphized objects with big eyes and smiles, in pastel colors like pink, light blue, mint, and lavender. This style is focused on young audiences and children; however, there are also adults like us who sometimes can’t resist the cuteness of these designs. By using rounded edges, the characters are given a friendlier and warmer appearance.
-
Music / Musician
String, percussion, and wind instruments, singers and bands, microphones, musical notes, staves, sheet music, headphones and speakers, stages such as concerts or festivals, etc., are the illustrations that most characterize this type of design.
In general, the music industry serves as the inspiration for this style, and photographs or silhouettes of artists are often used, sometimes paired with typography that reflects the branding of famous bands. Surely, just like us, you also have a favorite artist or band, think about all the elements that make up their aesthetic, and you’ll have a great source of inspiration.
-
Vintage / Retro:
We find this style incredibly versatile, offering a wide variety of elements, which is why we often incorporate it into our designs. Compositions inspired by past eras, typically between 1920 and 1980, that evoke feelings of nostalgia and often feature very distinct and characteristic design styles from those times, are the ones that dominate.
The goal is to revive the aesthetics of the chosen era, either with representations true to how the style was in the past or through current reinterpretations. Visual effects simulating the passage of time are also commonly used, such as scratches, fading, wrinkles, or old elements like cameras, typewriters, radios, and so on.
-
-
Floral
Patterns and textures of plants, earth, branches, seeds, or flowers in various colors and species, depicted in either a realistic or abstract way, dominate this style. They often feature phrases and have a delicate and harmonious style—just like roses and many other beautiful flowers we can find in our world. The compositions are usually asymmetrical and dynamic, emulating nature.
-
Stencil:
Shapes or silhouettes filled with various artistic effects such as paint, pencil strokes, or ink, sometimes with a solid-colored background. It is a simple style with basic shapes, designed to convey a clear and quick message.
-
Streetwear
Inspired by street aesthetics and culture, it aims to be a very relaxed and bold style. It features sporty, skate, hip-hop, and graffiti illustrations, with striking colors like neon to create visual impact, and fonts with grunge effects to convey a sense of rebellion. On our part, we often enhance this style by combining it with catchy phrases or standout words, creating designs that are perfect for showcasing on t-shirts.
-
Manga / Anime
The world of manga and Japanese anime has a large fandom that loves wearing t-shirts with this design style—and if you haven’t seen it, just attend an anime convention, and you’ll quickly realize it.
Typically, you’ll find illustrations featuring characters with large eyes, highly elaborate and exaggerated facial expressions, voluminous hair in various vibrant colors, eye-catching outfits, or weapons like katanas or ninja tools, inspired by or originating from famous series and mangas.
-
Summer
The designs focus on summer vacations, beaches, pools, sun, images of families enjoying themselves, people in bikinis or swimsuits, with towels, etc. They often have a very warm style with colors like yellow, orange, and red, evoking feelings of joy and fun, as summer is the favorite time of year for many—or at least it is for us and our close circle.
Illustrations of outdoor activities such as surfing and hiking, or summer landscapes and seasonal fruits, are also common.
-
Japanese, Graphic Japanese
This visual style is influenced by Japan’s culture, art, and traditions, combining elements of nature, such as the pink and beautiful cherry blossoms, with anime or manga illustrations, creating an aesthetic that is sometimes very elegant and other times very colorful.
- 90’s
The ’90s, the favorite era for many of our parents, introduced a more varied color palette than the 80’s, making use of gradients, 3D effects, and more complex combinations with metallic tones and a fusion of warm and cool colors. The typography tends to be more experimental, with irregularities and distortions, referencing the arrival of software like Photoshop and Illustrator during that time. It also draws inspiration from grunge aesthetics and alternative culture. -
-
80’s
Bright colors, neon hues with dark backgrounds, and pastel palettes. Iconic objects such as cassettes, vinyl records, space grids, repetitive patterns, and geometric shapes are common. There are also illustrations of pop culture icons—like Guns N’ Roses, our favorites— and drawings with a strong cyberpunk influence. The typography of the 80’s is usually large, bold, and often has a geometric or futuristic style. The influence of futuristic movies, music, and comics is also present.
-
Gamer / Gaming
For many of us, this design style brings back memories of childhood, when we used to spend hours playing with gaming consoles. Designs inspired by technology and futurism are common in this category, often featuring elements like consoles, controllers, and PCs. Neon colors are frequently used to mimic the look of video games, and there are also illustrations that reference game interfaces such as maps, health bars, pixels, etc. Robotic, digital, or pixelated fonts are used, often with a 3D touch.
-
Cartoon:
Expressive cartoon illustrations, usually with thick outlines to define the shapes and bright colors designed to grab attention. Sometimes, characters have exaggerated features—like the characteristic yellow skin tone of the Simpsons—to make them humorous or give them personality. This style is widely used to appeal to younger audiences.
-
Skull:
Skulls and related objects are the main focus of this type of design. They can be either realistic or minimalist illustrations, ranging from dark and macabre aesthetics in black, white, and beige, such as Gothic or punk styles, to more vibrant and colorful ones, like Mexican designs where skulls are adorned with flowers.
-
3D
Geometric and abstract shapes with depth and volume effects to create a sense of three-dimensionality, often combined with abstract or realistic textures resembling metal, wood, plastic, and glass. The typography is also often designed with these 3D effects to complement the overall design.
This design style is trending strongly for the upcoming year, and if you want to learn more about it, we have an article where we explain it in more detail.
-
Hip Hop / Urban
In this design style, the typography aims to express rebellion, which is why it resembles graffiti or worn-out styles commonly seen in street art. The color palette typically uses very vibrant tones and strong contrasts. Textures like brick or rough concrete, splattered with paint, work very well. Illustrations often feature characters in breakdancing poses, wearing streetwear, and incorporating symbols of Hip Hop music and culture—like the “Peace” sign, which is widely recognized around the world.
-
Pixel
The early internet interfaces and famous video games from the ’80s and ’90s are the inspiration for this design style. This is why it uses solid color palettes without gradients, similar to those supported by consoles like the NES or Game Boy. The shapes are often simple, with compositions featuring minimal details and geometric lines to make them appear as though they were created with a few pixels. The typography also adopts this pixelated effect to complement the design’s aesthetic. We believe this style is a great source of current inspiration, as it adds a lot of personality and uniqueness to any design.
-
Sports
Basketball, soccer, swimming, tennis, etc., and related elements such as balls, uniforms, and courts, are some of the sports that inspire these types of designs. The illustrations can be realistic or drawn—as a tip, we recommend going with the first ones, as they provide the design with a strong visual impact—often accompanied by bold and eye-catching typography, sometimes slanted to convey speed and action.
